Nailed It

[all photos from Instagram]

When you first meet someone, unless their smile is as dazzling as one of those Hollywood actors, or their hair is perfectly un-coiffed coiffed like Jane Birkin, studies have proven that we, human beings, look at their hands first. A good plenty of young and nifty people have banked on first hand impressions by taking nail polish to the next level of 3D designs or for the more tame bunch, nail art. Why do for flowers when you can get diamonds, right.

Oddly enough, throughout my life thus far, my nails have been a topic of choice around the dinner table. Throughout my years in middle school, my angsty twelve year old self, received more warning slips for wearing nail polish, then say not completing my homework. But the nail polish endeavor does not end at the land of pre-teen girls and plaid skirts. My poor mother nags me, mostly during the summer, when my polish has chipped down to scraped edges of polish pasts.

I digress. My chipped nail polish days are behind me for the most part- note the latter of that statement. As of late, I've been sharing my nails du jour on Instagram- shameless promotion is a b*tch, and it has gained a decent amount of attention for me to write this post. So as I type away, with what else than fresh blue nails, I'd like to state that I've never worn red nail polish, and odds are with never. Shocking? I have nothing against the blood-red color except that I feel like my nails are in fact, bleeding. Oh the irony of those polish names.

But before I get to the name, I'm faced with a wall of an overabundance of colors. I tend to go for cool tones of blue/purple or nude/white. During the winter I choose anything from a dark navy to a nude, then during the warmer months, white or a light blue is the normality.  Despite the fact that an innovative manicure is the hottest thing on the market, I tend to stay away from nail art and all that jazz. On the contrary, I do go for gel manicures as their last power is longer than my music library (i.e. long). Who would think that nail polish can launch a flood of thoughts from my brain all the way down to my now, chipped tips.

The Style List | N.2

Just to keep things from getting out of sorts, I'm no beauty maven nor can I barely put on eyeliner in a straight line. Oh the struggles of makeup are very real, my friends.

When it comes to makeup, three things are the main factors: easy, natural, and quick. I stick to products that work for me and use it 'till I'm scraping the bottom of a bronzer or lipstick- we all have been there. Check out my last beauty favorites post and my hair post, but for those who wonder what's on my face, here ya go:

There is one product I quickly just want to rave about- Marc Jacobs lip gel. For someone who hates lip products for the exception of... holler at you Vaseline! This lipstick has changed my life (in the sense of how much a lipstick can change ones life). Never the less, the silky formula doesn't have that odd lipstick feel and instead much more balmy. You rock, Marc.

Let's Be Frank

I rarely talk about beauty products on the blog because beauty isn't really my area of expertise. But, this one little body scrub revolutionized my skincare routine.

Oh you, Frank.

Story time, folks. Back in November, I came across @frank_bod on Instagram. At the time, Frank wasn't really a trend, but I thought why not try it? I ended up purchasing the normal coffee scrub. Well, my friends at USPS attempted to deliver it to my house *note this was during the holiday season* but, needed a signature three times. Fast forward a week later the post office informs me that they lost the package, so I'm off to the post office to hunt down Frank. The only thing that was going to through my head is, "it's just a body scrub"- but trust me, totally worth it. Two hours later and one irritating post office, Frank is still not to be found. But wait for it, plot twist: it shows up the next day. All for a body scrub.

Now you are probably wondering why is it so special? To put it simply, your skin turns buttery soft. I personally use Frank once a week and my skin has turned to velvet. Frank is filled with essential oils and all that good stuff that is amazing for your skin; zero chemicals and pure goodness. One of the downsides is that the scrub is very messy. I mean your bathroom smells like coffee and your shower and towels are covered in coffee grits. My advice is to use a little at a time to avoid making your shower brown. But, let's be frank- pun intended- I'm never using any other body scrub again. Plus, the cheeky marketing doesn't hurt (; Snap up yours now.

Beauty | Soft Waves

Rarely, I talk about beauty on the blog- it's not my area of expertise. Many of you emailed or tweeted me after this post asking about my hairstyle. Most of the time I leave my hair au natural. Lately, I've been mixing it up and adding a curl to it. Here is a quick tutorial on how to style the look and perhaps a video will be on the way soon. I hope this is helpful and let me know what your hair tips are.

NuMe curling wand, TreSemmé dry shampoo & heat protecter, Fekkai beach spray, dryBar brush

I: Apply heat protecter throughout the hair, focusing on the ends and scalp. Heat your curling wand up to your desired temperature- I usually go to 370 degrees.

II: Picking a side to start at, wrap your hair around the wand with the tip of the wand pointing downward. Hold for 10-15 seconds and then let the hair release. Focus on the bottom part of your hair so the waves look more beachy. Continue this step around your head.

III: After you loosely curl the whole head, work on the top sections near the roots. Starting closer to the scalp, curl the hair tighter so that they are more like spirals. It should almost look ridiculous but don't worry.

IV: Once the top is curled, check your head for any missed sections.

V: Rake your fingers to break up the curls. If you would like gently brush out the hair as well (I personally don't do use the brush because it frizzes up my hair).

VIII: Now you can go two ways; leave your hair down or add a mini topknot.

Down
Apply dry shampoo to the roots and shake out your hair. This will add some volume and extra texture. Taking a little bit of sea salt spray, spritz some into the palm of your hands and run your fingers through the ends. If you would like to add a little bit of volume; tease the roots and then smooth them out.
 Topknot
Add a little sea salt spray then taking a top section of your hair pulling it back. Twist into a bun and secure with a jaw clip.

Beauty Favorites

I've received several emails about my makeup and skincare routine and I'd thought I would share some of my favorite products. I also use drugstore products- like this mascara and this cream shadow.  I keep my skincare routine very simple using this cleanser and other natural products. As for makeup, I wear this foundation and bronzer. But, I've starting using this blush and lip color. For my eyes, I love Lancome mascara. When I do wear eyeliner, I reach for YSL. I take my makeup off with these wipes. As for fragrance- I go for this and this depending on the seasons. On my nails, I usually wear Marshmallow by Essie. I just bought Deborah Lippmann polish and cannot wait to wear it in St.Barts.  Tan Towels are great for travel and Fresh scrub makes your skin baby soft. I would love to know what your favorite beauty products are- please share!

Braidy Bunch

stylemepretty.com ,longhairstyleshowto.com, weheartit.com

Other than wearing my hair down and wavy, I am always in braids. Braids are super easy for school, everyday, and sports. For sailing it's really important that my hair doesn't get knotty or tangled. It's a real pain to deal with once I'm back on land. I also wear my hair in a side braid for school almost everyday. I must say, it's becoming a tad bit boring. I would love to try the last one on my hair when I return back to school. I also love the second one for girls with super long hair. You can mix it up and make it your one.

Winter Beauty Must-Haves

I love Winter- skiing, the snow, snow days- but the season can seriously damage your hair, and skin. Hair becomes unruly and dry, and your skin is stripped of moisture. I really amp up my routines during the colder months, it truly makes a difference. I swear by the products I've included below. What are you favorite Winter must-haves? Also, be sure to check out my favorite Resort picks to see what I'll be wearing when I escape the cold.

Keep on Sailing,
Sloane

Hello! This week's It Girl is Sophie Elkus. Sophie writes the amazing blog AngelFoodStyle. Sophie is so sweet, and has fantastic style. Her look is so chic, and she loves playing with trends, but keeping true to her own style. I love the items she picked for her Fall essentials.
