Packing List

If you didn't catch on from my hashtagTBT Insta post,  I'll be returning to my favorite island in a nine days. As I'm 100% finito with wearing turtlenecks and fleece up to my eyeballs, you can only imagine the bottled up excitement of purchasing clothes that happen to be filed under: sun and sand.

But the party doesn't stop there. I also have been keeping something else under wrap in addition to my upcoming trip. Next week, big changes will be coming to Sailing the Sea of Style. And by changes, I mean bigger than the big bang theory changes. Okay, okay, let's not get too carried away there. Even though things will be switched up, don't you worry, little 'ol me will still be typing away behind the screen.

Before you go and shop some sun ready pieces, I need some help from a few readers. Email me at SLOANE.C.K@GMAIL.COM to get the scoop of why I'm recruiting you.

Until then you know the drill: sun's out, guns out.

Red Handed

Starting this Monday with a bang and my new favorite color, cherry red. When Fall rolls around... uh, today, my wardrobes simplifies to a handful of curated pieces.

You caught me (red-handed). #punnyfunny

This sweater? Impulse buy from that cunning little Spaniard- go back to Friday to catch my drift. An oversized knit paired with light wash denim and a ladylike pump is should I say, the ideal juxtaposition for September sartorial selection aka "the tedious task of getting dressed in the wee hours of the morning"

But back to that nonsense of curated pieces. It isn't a complete white lie, folks!! This weekend I lived in 6 pieces: two jeans, one stripe, one sweater (25% off), one sneaker, and one slide-on. Mind you, my weekend consisted of Netflix and homework... party hard?

I plan to break out my cherry red jumper once again, fluffiness, color and all next weekend.

Transitional

It's inevitable to go through any season change and not title at least blog post with the word or any word somewhat similar to transition. Face the facts here people.

Despite the sky rocket annoyance of it, I can say without a doubt that summer to fall, is one damn hard time. Especially when coats and layers are playing sartorial mind games on you.

But, let's get real. Anyone who is whipping out fall attire in 90 degrees should get their head checked out.  I'm shocked on how I managed to wear pants (erm, culottes) when it was hot and humid last Saturday for some NYFW meetings and events.

The key: popping into AC as often as possible and hoping for the best.

To keep the summer side in line, my trusty white crop top did me well to beat the heat. I cannot say the same for these loafers though... as cute as they are, the blisters are not. #bandaids4days? Oh yes.

Great Lengths

New in: this season's latest man repelling item is no one other than my favorite culottes. Along with a duster- which is a mash up of Superhero cape and Sherlock Holmes might I add- is my favorite lazy dressing item for fall. It was the silk shorts in the summer, but August is no more folks. Burnt Sienna- I feel quite silly saying that, in case you are wondering- is my favorite shade to sport. The perfect mix of camel and orange, gives a die hard black cat, some joy of color into her fall wardrobe.

But, let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Today was 95 degrees and the living definition of what mid-July should feel like. All my regards to you, Mother Nature. So, if you can imagine, whipping out those new purchases isn't exactly going to cut it for the moment. Summer staples like a crop top and those insanely comfortable sandals will carry you into the best (next) season with ease.

Now, that's a transition for you, eh?

Odd One Out

The combination of summer and leather seems incredibly daunting, in the sense that a) you will swelter in the hot and humid air or b) it's just plain uncomfortable. But.... stepping outside the box is where the creativity is found. Taking a once a fashion don't into a must do is the only way to create an outfit that hasn't been reblogged on Tumblr one million times before, if you know what I mean.

Once you get past the strange idea of wearing leather (in my case, vegan leather) in hot July, double leather is an interesting take on the classic summer sartorial formula of a tank top and shorts. These Heidi Merrick shorts were a match made in heaven for a spur-of-the-moment Zara purchase. (Who are we kidding? All Zara purchases are sporadic!)

Call me crazy or the odd one out in a sea of linen, but I'll happily be wearing leather until we hit that 90 degrees mark, then I'll be sporting linen.

But, until then....

Cricket & Comebacks

French Connection sweater c/o // Zara playsuit (similar) // Clare Vivier clutch // Chanel ballet flats (similar) // Catbird ring // Bauble Bar midi ring // Vintage sunglasses (similar)

Though I don't know much about the game of cricket, I can tell you one thing- they created a great sweater. As a person who used to over wear sweaters (circa 2007-2010), now I tend to only stick to classic sweaters borrowed from my brother's closet. I definitely surprised myself when I picked out this sweater from French Connection. Just like what they say about karma- what goes around comes around. Perhaps it's the same when it comes to clothing.

Instead of pairing the sweater a normal way (in my defense, I never said I was normal),  I wore my favorite playsuit underneath. Easy layering, I must say. Even though I will never play cricket, I will be happily sporting the sweater on the regular. Maybe sweaters are making a comeback in my wardrobe. I'll keep you posted on that.

On My Radar

Last night, I realized that I haven't done one of these posts in a long time. I have been getting in my fair share of spring shopping but these are some of the items on my running wish list and what I've been gravitated towards in general. Joie's sandals are perfection and are a match made in heaven with  Heidi Merrick's neutrals. I am a big fan of Clare Vivier bags and think this large tote would be perfect for travel. Please share with me what you are coveting this week. Shop all the items below:

Navy Leather

Tory Burch leather jacket- borrowed // Vineyard Vines sweater // Zara pants (last worn here
// Stuart Weitzman boots // Clare Vivier clutch // Loren Hope bracelet

I am constantly wearing oversized sweaters (mostly borrowed from my brother).  The past weekend, I pretty much lived in this Vineyard Vines one. To polish up the causal look, I borrowed this Tory Burch leather jacket from my mom. It was a little big on me, but it worked because of the oversized knit underneath. A delicate peplum on the jacket adds a feminine touch to the overall look.

Have you checked out Sailor's Shop yet? It's full of holiday gifts and goodies!

Luxe Opposites

Madewell sweater // Zara pants // Chanel ballet flats // Clare Vivier clutch // Michael Kors watch
 // Madewell & Bauble Bar rings // KJP bracelet c/o //

In fashion, it's all about opposites- as quoted by Nina Garcia last week at an event I attended. It is so true; you can mix high and low, girly and edgy, the list goes on and on. In addition to mixing styles, I am a big fan of mixing textures and fabrics: chunky and silky or tweed and cotton for example. Here I'm showing a contrast of chunky- with the knit sweater- and sleek- with the coated jeans. Mixing opposites can make any look much more unique and eye-catching. Always remember that fashion is not meant to be taken too seriously- take risks and play around.

Grunge As It Gets

I was not one to jump on the punk/grunge trend- and I'm still not 100% committed. But, after I found this plaid skirt from Asos, I decided that a little punk couldn't hurt. Surprisingly, the plaid skirt is very versatile; it works with navy, black, blue... you get my point. Here, I'm wearing it with a simple t-shirt and grey loafers. To transition the outfit into Fall one could add a jacket, tights, and ankle boots. Let me know if you are dipping into the "grunge" trend at all or if you are keeping your distance.

Belle

Dolce Vita dress // Tory Burch wedges (last worn here) // Clare Vivier clutch (similar) // Marc by Marc Jacobs sunglasses (old) // Vanessa Mooney finger chain // Bauble Bar studded ring
// Bauble Bar libra ring

I mentioned before how much I wanted to save this dress for France but I still gave in to wearing it back home. Even though I already wore the dress, I couldn't wait to wear it in Provence as well. The simple lace has a hidden drama in it that definitely came out in Crillon le Brave. Today is my last day in Provence then I am heading back home. I've had a fantastic time and can't wait to share my favorite moments with you! Hope you have a wonderful Monday. Xxx
