4 Things Street Style Taught Me | PFW

ph. by Tommy Ton for style.com

To close up the month of fashion, the door closed in Paris. Stay tuned for a better late than never roundup of the best of PFW. Till September, (fashion) school is out.

1: The over sized denim jacket is your new bestie. When paired with flares in a similar wash, your 70s to 90s crossover game is sharp.

2: To add shape to any coat,  utilize your belt or for those who are innovative, ribbon works just as well.

3: Headscarves aren't just for the beach or windy days cruising on the PCH.

4: Take note from one of the most stylish of them all, a cape plus a jacket sans sleeves guarantees maximum everything.

Packing List

If you didn't catch on from my hashtagTBT Insta post,  I'll be returning to my favorite island in a nine days. As I'm 100% finito with wearing turtlenecks and fleece up to my eyeballs, you can only imagine the bottled up excitement of purchasing clothes that happen to be filed under: sun and sand.

But the party doesn't stop there. I also have been keeping something else under wrap in addition to my upcoming trip. Next week, big changes will be coming to Sailing the Sea of Style. And by changes, I mean bigger than the big bang theory changes. Okay, okay, let's not get too carried away there. Even though things will be switched up, don't you worry, little 'ol me will still be typing away behind the screen.

Before you go and shop some sun ready pieces, I need some help from a few readers. Email me at SLOANE.C.K@GMAIL.COM to get the scoop of why I'm recruiting you.

Until then you know the drill: sun's out, guns out.

4 Things Street Style Taught Me | LFW

ph. by Tommy Ton for style.com

After a frozen tundra met fashion, or mainly known as New York Fashion Week, next on the list is London. I never like to play favorites, but I've always been fond of LFW- let's face it, those brits now how to dress and the shows? Always different and unique, a concept the industry often lacks of.

Yet, some of the magic happens of the runway. Once again, round two of street style school.

From the archives... past street style lessons

1: Weather permitting, skip the jacket. A borrowed from the boys sweater and thick scarf work double time in your wardrobe when you're just not feeling a jacket.

2: Forget normcore, playful is cool again. Quirky embellishments take a basic navy top coat to another level.

3: A personal favorite of mine from on the blog a few weeks ago. The 70s show is still going strong with suede, and this season's best detail... lace-up.

4: Lastly, remember two key things displayed by Camille and Pernille. Smile once in a while. And the rain stops for no one. No one.

4 Things Street Style Taught Me | NYFW

Time for the 2nd bi-annual street style lessons that fashion month graces upon us. As record freezing temperatures struck New York as the fashion scene was in full swing, it called for creative layering amongst both the attendees and more skillful than creative layering, by the photographers. And may I add, those photogs are the real winners as wind chills dip below zero, and the city streets turn into ice rinks. Like last time, here is Tommy Ton's incredible photography explaining four important lessons one can only learn through prime street style.

1: Textures are the best way to look camera ready in sub zero weather. A fur trimmed hood mixed with mesh? Well, d-uh. The secret? Tights and thermals.

2: The opposite of a texture party? Classics par-tay. They'll never fail you. Boy meets girl sartorial workings won't either. Bonus points for keeping your leather boots spiffy.

3: All you need in life is a camel coat and a dashing smile as displayed by some favorite frenchies. Caroline's bedhead? That's all up to you.

4: Thanks to fashion's leading QB, helmets are better than beanies.

Superbowl a la Tommy

Yesterday's most talked about show was no doubt, Tommy Hilfiger. His Fall 2015 collection, which also doubles as the 30th anniversary of the powerhouse, was an ode to Hilfiger's All-American, iconic brand. With what else other than football and the country's expressive period of the 70s? The runway turned stadium was the perfect setting to the old-school prep attire that was mixed with nouveau Letterman jackets, toggle-coats, and rich knits colored cognac and camel that resulted in a unique and relevant nod to the 70s-prep of Ivy League Friday night lights.

The models (which included an impressive team of Gigi, Jourdan, Liu, and co.) sported Ali McGraw inspired hair and makeup which added a California touch to the collection. As the collection was inspired by America's favorite pastime, the football lace-up booties are sure to become the next "It" thing.

Tommy's (field) goal for the collection was to take something from the past and apply it to what works in fashion today. In this case, we see who the new QB is.

The New Lace-Up

Ladies &gents, I present you to the new (new) lace up.  At first we saw the look way back when with Isabel Marant x HM. Everyone with two legs was on the hunt for those lace-up leather pants (you must remember them?!), and if you happened to miss the merry go round the first time, EBay was a hot market. As that trend fell into the shadows of lost fashionland, Gucci gave it some light.

First seen on the runway for S/S back in September, the lace up  notably had a 70s influence that met retro sport. When you add the crisp indigo denim and nautical ties, I'm all on board.

On the topic of trends, #NYFW is in full swing- what has caught your eye? Of course, a fresh new fashion week calls for the return of my lessons learned from street style....

Nailed It

[all photos from Instagram]

When you first meet someone, unless their smile is as dazzling as one of those Hollywood actors, or their hair is perfectly un-coiffed coiffed like Jane Birkin, studies have proven that we, human beings, look at their hands first. A good plenty of young and nifty people have banked on first hand impressions by taking nail polish to the next level of 3D designs or for the more tame bunch, nail art. Why do for flowers when you can get diamonds, right.

Oddly enough, throughout my life thus far, my nails have been a topic of choice around the dinner table. Throughout my years in middle school, my angsty twelve year old self, received more warning slips for wearing nail polish, then say not completing my homework. But the nail polish endeavor does not end at the land of pre-teen girls and plaid skirts. My poor mother nags me, mostly during the summer, when my polish has chipped down to scraped edges of polish pasts.

I digress. My chipped nail polish days are behind me for the most part- note the latter of that statement. As of late, I've been sharing my nails du jour on Instagram- shameless promotion is a b*tch, and it has gained a decent amount of attention for me to write this post. So as I type away, with what else than fresh blue nails, I'd like to state that I've never worn red nail polish, and odds are with never. Shocking? I have nothing against the blood-red color except that I feel like my nails are in fact, bleeding. Oh the irony of those polish names.

But before I get to the name, I'm faced with a wall of an overabundance of colors. I tend to go for cool tones of blue/purple or nude/white. During the winter I choose anything from a dark navy to a nude, then during the warmer months, white or a light blue is the normality.  Despite the fact that an innovative manicure is the hottest thing on the market, I tend to stay away from nail art and all that jazz. On the contrary, I do go for gel manicures as their last power is longer than my music library (i.e. long). Who would think that nail polish can launch a flood of thoughts from my brain all the way down to my now, chipped tips.

Gimme Ganni

Sub-zero temperatures have hounded the Northeast, and god forbid that if I leave my house with a plethora of layers, I might freeze up like Jack Frost. The idea of simply purchasing clothing for Spring and Summer not only fulfills my hope that warmer weather is near, but also satisfies my sartorial needs.

With bathing suits and linen on my mind, the last thing I'm thinking about is adding another coat to my collection let alone wearing one. But then, the Ganni show during Copenhagen Fashion Week rolls around and I'm weak at the knees, baby.

The Scandi-land favorite knows how to take a girly vibe, and morph it into something crisp and cool. Cobalt blue leather jackets and plaid blanket capes is making me rethink my neutralized mindset, and romantic florals that would give any fairytale princess meets British countryside chick look a run for their money. A 70s influence was of course present at Ganni. The trend from Spring 2015 is still has oil in its engine, so you must take a note from the best of the best (i.e. Ganni) and pull tried and true inspiration from the originals (i.e. Bianca Jagger)

Shop the latest Ganni here.

Swim Good

Following up from last week's post on Kauai- thank you for such a great response to it. So, the beach bug has become much worse. With St.Barths two months away, of course, it only seems right to begin shopping because ya know, I'm pretty much Webster's walking example of a planner.

Into the Future

By 2015, we all thought there was going to be flying cars and we'd be living either on the moon or mars. Well, Zenon Girl 21st Century  really upped my standards for my views of the future. Despite the fact that it's we are 1/5 into the century- tragically- without flying cars, the ever great Alexander Wang is giving us his take of the future of fashion with his latest collection at Balenciaga. The latest campaign features a sleek Sasha (those cheekbones) working layers of mesh and floor-grazing capes. Sheer paneling and jewel-encrusted shades give any Zenon-esque chick a run for their money.

All  future movie references aside, the fashion industry happens to be taking a turn into a modern direction of wearable technology and minimal clothing that most definitely does not represent the past.

Currently/Coveting

Currently: wearing as many layers as possible and trying to avoid resembling the abominable snowman and frostbite.

Coveting: the whole entire Pre-Fall The Row collection full of luxurious minimalistic goodness served with a side of sequin slides.

Three claps for MK&A on their ability to convince me that I need (scratch that, must) to embrace the skirt over trousers look, and should never wear any other colors except camel, hunter green, and gray amongst pink and navy- head to toe.

Number One

Since beginning my turtleneck obsession last winter, I've racked up quite a collection. I've done a video on how to wear it three different ways and have sported my favorite cold weather piece numerous times, so it's quite obvious why this piece is number one in my sartorial winter handbook. Despite many purchases, I just recently found the best turtleneck sweater (plus, it was on sale). I wore it to dinner Sunday night, all day whilst road tripping up to Vermont, and then once again to dinner. Urban Outfitters always pulls out some great pieces (like these sweats which I'm wearing). Stay tuned for a proper outfit post, but until then enjoy some Instagrams.

Behind the 'Gram

Whilst these behind the scenes post have been circulating the internet (I love Gracey's take), I finally have decided to take a whirl at it- better late the never, right?

I picked a few of my most recent 'grams to reveal what really goes on behind the lens. And of course, shameless (shame-inducing) self promotion is in order.... you know where to find me.

'Gram: A causal "instagram inception" while decorating the tree. There is the Christmas tree and a slick iPhone 6 +... yes, just had two phones laying around the house. Duh.

BTG: The difference between the 5 and 6 camera is absurd. My poor iPhone couldn't stand a chance at capturing the tree in all its glory, so throw in another iPhone and we have a winner.

'Gram: Just another rainy day at school, Sitting in the library by a window, blissfully doing my homework.

BTS: LIES! Lies! Yes, I was by a window and doing my homework (re: not blissfully). But procrastination took over and I ended up leaning over a bookshelf trying to focus in on the raindrops for a solid five minutes. The result of that? A librarian who thinks I need help.

'Gram: Spending a nice Winter's day at the beach. All cozy in my fur jacket #lifeisgood

BTG: It was cold. And I, Sloane, was not cozy. PSA: when wearing a fur jacket, layer up. I also ended up tripping over rocks when passing my phone to my brother, because a: I am Sloane, and b: I am a klutz. What's new?

'Gram: CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS!!! Look at me being über festive and staring off into a distance full of holiday joy.

BTG: To your surprise, this instagram was quite a natural shot. I was sitting on the floor and wrapping presents, where I proceeded to smack a bow on top of my head, and voila! The photo is born.

'Gram: #iwokeuplikethis #perfectbed #tumblr #white

BTG: I actually woke up like this. On my morning rounds of social media, I thought to myself "damn, my feed is lacking in white". Next thing I know, I am standing on my bed.

Style List | All I Want For Christmas

It's less than ten days to the most wonderful day of the year and I, a wannabe Griswold, self-proclaimed Christmas expert, have completed my gift shopping. And no, they're was no exquisite wrapping like Love Actually or matching doves from Home Alone.... C'mon how many times must I reference holiday movies in a week? But instead, I completed a used to-be-tedious task thanks to easy online shopping, plus a few trips to some of my favorite city stores.

So in the spirit of Mariah's- preferably lip-synced- song, this is all I want for Christmas (take note, family, friends, secret santa or admirer...)

If you still haven't checked everyone off your list, Shopbop is having a sale and Bergdorf Goodman has free two-day shipping to get your presents at your doorstep in time for Christmas. And if you haven't already, head over to Sailor's Holiday Shop to find the perfect piece for that one friend who is extremely picky. We all have them.

Gift Guide: Under $50

As we have 23 days to Christmas, the official holiday craziness has begun.

Today's gift guide might just be my personal favorite. Like my past two gift guides, all items can be found from a specific retailer. This week's lucky ducky? Shopbop

I'm obsessed with the Kate Moss book, and the most stylish best friends iPhone case... I mean, c'mon who wouldn't want that? Most of the time when it comes to under $50 gift ideas, you'll just see a whole bunch of candles- did I walk into a Yankee Candles? yeah, no- and random nondescript stocking stuffers. This budget-friendly batch works for the hostess, a stocking stuffer for your sister, and let's get real here, yourself.

As I'm all about spreading some l'esprit de Noël (!!!), some giveaways are coming your way that will make jolly ole' St.Nick jealous.
