March Playlist

I would say Spring is among us, but considering the fresh pow-pow on the road, it just doesn't feel right. But, that hasn't stopped me from breaking out some Spring-inspired tunes.

Lately, I've been into old-school rock, the Friday Night Lights soundtrack.... no joke and a few forgotten tracks that have been resurrected in my iTunes Library.

Really digging this month's playlist. Take a listen, and leave a comment below on what you think.

Read My Mind (Like Rebel Diamonds Remix)- The Killers
She's A Rainbow- The Rolling Stones
Icarus- Bastille
It's Still Rock and Rolle to Me- Billy Joel
Charlie Brown- Coldplay
London Calling- The Clash
Cough Syrup- Young the Giant
Battles- Hudson Taylor
50 Ways to Leave Your Lover- Paul Simon
Forever- Haim

I Resolve To... | February

(I am 194528)

Excuse the slight tardiness in today's post. 24 hours goes by hella fast, and I digress that I never found the time to write my monthly update this past week.

To adequately sum up February in one word, sailing is the chosen word, no doubt. If you didn't know from Instagrams of boats and sunsets, I spent a lengthy ten days in Clearwater Beach, FL to train and to compete at Lasers Midwinters East Regatta. Most definitly the hardest fleet I've ever competed in, along with tough conditions. But hey, one crucial thing I learned? Hard work pays off.

I'll refrain from updating you play-by-play of wind shifts and tactics from the race course, but if any of you sailors are interested, my inbox is open.

2 months down...

|| Travel to a new country & state ||
Nothing fell under new in terms of place, but traveling was the main focus of this month. Next month (jokes, this month) also focuses on travel once again.

|| Memory jar & make GoPro videos ||
When returning to the frozen tundra of CT, I spent about 10 minutes sitting in my room, cocooned in blankets, writing memories from Florida on Post-Its. Dead serious. Even though it's already March, I cannot recommend enough starting a memory jar. Oh the lols, I'll have when reading them come December. As for the GoPro video? Think sharks, sunsets, and sailing coming to your screen as soon as yours truly finds the time to edit roughly 6 hours of video.

 || Continue to grow my business and expand into new territories ||
 Those changes I was hinting on last month? My email has been flooding with talk of it. Like that video? Coming to a screen near you soon. I wish I could share, but I'm trying to keep this one tightly-sealed. Sorry, Meghan Trainor, my lips aren't movin.

 || Live bold ||
I think sailing can state I successfully fulfilled this goal. Along with other events from this month, hashtag  yolo is going strong.

|| Train harder for sailing ||
Do I really need to answer this one? Uhhh... read above. As for gym time, back at it since Friday.

|| Only buy pieces I truly love ||
  Whoever said buying pieces you only love needs to be a small quantity lied. I went a little crazy last night- of course, the last day of the month- but so worth it. Damn it Mother Nature, these 20 degree days are heavily influencing my online shopping.

February Playlist

Another month, another new round of tunes. Along with my normal Spotfiy playlist, I've also linked some covers and remixes from within the music world of the internet. Along with this selection of songs, Walk the Moon's latest album has been blasting through my headphones whilst I'm at the gym. On the topic of pumping iron tunes, this Spotify playlist is my go to when vigorous workouts are in order (aka everyday with this sailing training).

|| 2.15 ||
Lost in My Mind- The Head And The Heart
Blame It On Me- George Ezra
Drop the Game- Flume, Chet Faker
Work This Body- Walk the Moon
Bros- Wolf Alice
Last Nite- The Strokes
Electric Love- Børns
Messed Up Kids- Jake Bugg
Mango Tree- Angus & Julia Stone
Other Side- Kid Mac
Lucky Denver Mint- Jimmy Eat World
Santa Fe- Beirut

I Resolve To... | January

Resolutions can go two ways. Option A, they become a distant memory of deciding that you could become a millionaire in 30 days (possible, but odds are not in your favor), or option B, goals that you slowly work towards over 12 months aka the more reliable option.

In past years, I defaulted to the first option, but hey, when the clock stroke 12, I chose to take "new year, new me" and run with it- literally and figuratively.

Meet my new series, I Resolve To. When each month comes to a close, have it be happily or in a thank the-heavens-this-month-is-over type vibe, I'll be updating you on where I stand with my goals (which you can read here). As I've explained before, I wouldn't call myself a goal-oriented person. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing; I'll never be the girl to wake up at the crack of daylight and run a mile in 4.594739 minutes. Let's not kid ourselves here. But what I've learned over the past month is that when you focus on the big picture, everything falls into line. Oh indeed, this is resulting in another cliche-fest, but bear with me.

If you happen to set your goals like option A, take a look at them, and perhaps, just perhaps, you might need to reevaluate the current 'stich.

The main reason, I've created this series is for you all to remind me about my goals. Secondly, it's on the internet. You know what they say about the internet, it never goes away. Alas, I am keeping myself on track by posting my goals online. Kids, if that isn't pure motivation, then I'm stumped.

... 1 month down.

|| Travel to a new country & state ||
  Not much travel happening in this neck of the woods right now. I will be in Florida for sailing in two weeks, and then some amazing trips in the next 6 months!

|| Memory jar & make GoPro videos ||
 Perhaps my favorite resolution. It's been a goal of mine to keep a memory jar for a whole year, and so far, so good this year. I update it simply when something happened that I want to remember (hence the self-explanatory name). The first purchase I made of 2015 was a GoPro. And oh my, you'd think that I'm considering becoming a director. I went for the whole shebang of a #selfiestick, and some other gadgets. I've had a blast filling random clips this month, but don't worry my child, some cooler videos are coming soon (unlike, putting a GoPro on a dog)

 || Continue to grow my business and expand into new territories ||
 I hate to sound like the most anti-climatic blawwggger on this planet, but I am stoked to announce some new projects that I started this month. While you won't see them for a little bit, I can cross my heart, pinky promise, that they will be worth the wait.

 || Live bold ||
Give me some slack on this one, as this isn't exactly an overnight miracle, but my overall 'tude has turned into "you do you, and let me do me"... try it, and see yourself. The more yourself you are, the bolder you are. Easy as 1-2-3.

|| Train harder for sailing ||
 This is a straight 10 out of 10. Which leads us to the, confession(s) of the day: I've turned into a gym rat and avocado is the best thing since dairy free frozen yogurt (I've cut out all processed and sugary foods). Yeah, yeah, a little late to the party on the latest health trends, but sailing training is kicking my butt, so I might as well eat amazing food.

|| Only buy pieces I truly love ||
  I am flat out amazed at myself for the reason that, I only purchased two pieces of clothing this month. This sweater from Unif... because my turtleneck collection needed a spruce up, and this Kiini swimsuit as I desperately wanted one before they flew off the shelves. Butttt.... my list for Spring is growing (and rapidly). Cue the see no evil monkey emoji.

I Want To Go To There | N. 2

ph. Gray Malin

It only seems fitting to make this week's pick, Antarctica. Considering the fact that Mother Nature's white blanket outside The icy continent that is home to polar bears and penguins has been on my must visit list for years. Odds are though, I won't be visiting for a while but maybe, I'll check two of the list- Patagonia to Antarctica cruise in 2018? Crossing my (freezing) fingers.

But in all honesty, do it for the penguins

Behind the 'Gram | II

What time is it? (time for you to get a watch).

Jokes, jokes. But really, it seems as if everyone at school finally understood that a watch was a practical thing to own. And oh-em-gee, and it can look good.

On that note, let's get back on track and try that again.

What time is it? Time to dive back into behind the gram. Instead of revealing how I get the 'gram- cue ridiculous things people do for social media-, let's discuss how I take it from the phone, through several editing apps, then to good ol' Instagram. Plus, go and read some other tips of mine regarding the perfect shot.

Shall we dive right in?.... don't forget to follow me along at @sailingseastyle

The main goal of my Instagram is to give you a glimpse into my day to day life (except for what I eat... #eatitdonttweetit). The power of Instagram is that I can take a basic image or a small moment of my day- like this old man looking quite dapper crossing W 4th St- and bring it to the next level.

Like always, let's get the ball rolling... leave a comment below for any Insta related questions or comments. What app do you use or what do you find the hardest about getting the 'gram?

Crazy to think we are actually talking about the art behind an app. Indeed it is the 21st Century.

Welcome 2015

Well, I'd be damned. It's January 2nd. 364 days to check those goals off your list.

Through reflecting on 2014, I've been able to define what I really want to make of this year. During a lengthy conversation with a good friend of mine about the ridiculousness that went down over the year, we kept returning to the idea of "living bold". In my eyes, living bold means being able to take chances, and live each day to the fullest. Cheesy? No doubt, but in 2015 I resolve to live bold. Along with that broad statement, I plan to focus on a few other key things over time. Some of which include: keeping a memory jar, increasing my training for sailing, and fulfilling my love for travel. And of course, I have a few other resolutions, but my friend, those should not surface the world-wide-webz.

What do you wanna make of this year? I listen with open ears!

2014 | Under 500 Words

As said in Monday's post, to even think that we are few days away from a new year, leaves me wondering where the hell 2014 went! Of course I can get all nostalgic, and blab on about how much I've grown this year and ya know, the cliche shebang that comes along with a new year.

However, it is all true. Every year we grow and change, learn new things, and become different people. Much has occurred over the past year that leave me forever and eternally grateful. I could tell you right now that I am not the same I was 365 days ago- lord, I hope not- but you get my gist. From this year I'm able to pinpoint moments where the universe either slapped me in the face or gave a pat on the back- the latter is more appreciated. We each deal with a fair amount of triumph, struggle, heartbreak, and those moments that you simply cannot put into words. Those moments which remind us how incredible life is. They are able to put a smile on your face that is impossible to wipe off or leave you with butterflies in your stomach for too long.

I've learned that the world works in odd ways and that there are times when you feel like everything went downhill reallll fast (hey, I've been there), but things can change in an instant. When thinking about what my resolutions are for the new year, I noticed that they were connected with other things (sailing, school, blogging..... and boys (;). And whilst those are all fine, I think we sometimes forget about ourselves. To become a better you, to live your life, to follow your dreams... To even add more clicheness to this post, I think it's nice to view our life similarly to a novel and every year is a chapter that we can write on our own. There is no ghostwriters (eye-balling you Kardashians), nor spellcheck, but 100% you.

Perhaps this year wasn't the best, but you always have a chance to make the next read-worthy. On that note, I have some amazing things on the calendar for 2015- both for this digital universe and for myself. [insert fist emoji]

With that, I leave you with with my all-time favorite quote from Fitzgerald, "I hope you live a life you're proud of. If you find that you're not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again".

Happy New Year.

Behind the 'Gram

Whilst these behind the scenes post have been circulating the internet (I love Gracey's take), I finally have decided to take a whirl at it- better late the never, right?

I picked a few of my most recent 'grams to reveal what really goes on behind the lens. And of course, shameless (shame-inducing) self promotion is in order.... you know where to find me.

'Gram: A causal "instagram inception" while decorating the tree. There is the Christmas tree and a slick iPhone 6 +... yes, just had two phones laying around the house. Duh.

BTG: The difference between the 5 and 6 camera is absurd. My poor iPhone couldn't stand a chance at capturing the tree in all its glory, so throw in another iPhone and we have a winner.

'Gram: Just another rainy day at school, Sitting in the library by a window, blissfully doing my homework.

BTS: LIES! Lies! Yes, I was by a window and doing my homework (re: not blissfully). But procrastination took over and I ended up leaning over a bookshelf trying to focus in on the raindrops for a solid five minutes. The result of that? A librarian who thinks I need help.

'Gram: Spending a nice Winter's day at the beach. All cozy in my fur jacket #lifeisgood

BTG: It was cold. And I, Sloane, was not cozy. PSA: when wearing a fur jacket, layer up. I also ended up tripping over rocks when passing my phone to my brother, because a: I am Sloane, and b: I am a klutz. What's new?

'Gram: CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS!!! Look at me being über festive and staring off into a distance full of holiday joy.

BTG: To your surprise, this instagram was quite a natural shot. I was sitting on the floor and wrapping presents, where I proceeded to smack a bow on top of my head, and voila! The photo is born.

'Gram: #iwokeuplikethis #perfectbed #tumblr #white

BTG: I actually woke up like this. On my morning rounds of social media, I thought to myself "damn, my feed is lacking in white". Next thing I know, I am standing on my bed.

Holiday Drink

Ok... confession: I am no kitchen connoisseur,  but I still like to experiment with some things, like my own spin on a holiday drink. It's a great take on a spicy/chocolate tea, but much healthier and to say the least, you know what the ingredients are..

{Ingredients}
- boiled water
- 1 cup of almond mink- vanilla optional
- handful of semi-sweet/dark chocolate chips
- pinch to a teaspoon of cinnamon
- 2-3 drops of stevia French Vanilla sweetener
- 1 tea bag of pumpkin spice

{Recipe}
- boil water at 375* F
- In a separate saucepan, melt chocolate chips until they are a smooth mixture
- Add in the almond milk with chocolate
- Stir milk and chocolate until they evenly mixed together
- By now, the hot water should be steaming... soak the tea in with a pitcher or right into a mug
- In the saucepan, add cinnamon and sweetener to the mixture
- Boil until color has darkened
- Mix the almond milk mixture with the pumpkin spice tea in a mug (it should be 2/3 parts milk, 1/3 water)
- Stir and enjoy!

Weekend by the water

To begin a season full of weekend trips in New England, Saturday was spent in the quaint beach town  of Niantic, CT. Nothing makes a day better than fish n chips, college sailing, and making a muck on the beach. Excluding dealing with salt sprayed denim and sandy feet... you win some, you lose some, eh?

Monday funday, let's do it kids.

Smart Girls Summit

Last Wednesday & Thursday, I woke up at the crack of dawn and ventured into my favorite city for the Smart Girls Summit. In a sea of business suits on Metro-North, there was little me clad in this getup and then this one. It was wonderful and inspiring to hear such smart woman (no pun intended) who've made a change in the world. The first day was filled with motivational panels and keynotes with woman like Shiza Shahid who is the powerhouse behind the Malala Fund. Every person in the room was awestruck and moved by everything that Shiza said. Thursday was just as amazing with great panels, especially the blogging focused featuring Lauren from rewardStyle, Mackenzie, Carly, and Molly.

Along with inspiring panels and speakers, I also met plenty of you guys, and finally matched faces to social media handles- its come to that, folks! I spent free  time with some of my favorite girls, Frannie, Caroline, Chloe, plus some new mates- Sammy, Morgane, and Bella.

After the conference ending up Thursday, Morgane, Bella, and I walked around The Shops at Columbus Circle, and then plopped our tired selves in Central Park- with ice cream in hand, no less. The three of us instantly bonded, and to say the least they are just such cool chicks. Already exhausted, dinner at The Smith with Carin, Fran, Sammy, and Chloe perked me up thanks to endless laughter and plenty of time crammed into the photo booth.

I am so thankful to have these amazing friends in my life. As cliche as it may sound, never in a million years would I think that I would be friends I met over the internet. Oh, how the world works in a crazy way.

Musings of Alber

 Yesterday, I had a crazy (pinch me) type moment- this one is filed at the top of the list.

I was given the chance to attend an exclusive Lanvin Resort 2015 show with American Express. Enter the coolest part- the icon himself, Alber Elbaz was there. The artistic director behind the only single standing French house talked about the concept and creativity behind his latest collection. As fashion has become over-saturated with frivolous- essentially, things- his goal was to strip away the extravagance and keep the focus on the designs. When Alber was working under Yves Saint Laurent, the late designer taught him that fashion should never be perfect, for the sake of it simply isn't possible. Alber talked about how this has influenced his designs throughout his career by creating art within his clothes. Once again, he did not disappoint and showcased another brilliant collection. It was full of experimental fabrics shown in new ways, menswear inspired suits, but with alluring details such as sheer paneling and deep cuts. Jewels encrusted mod shifts and tops, whilst silk florals belt and neckties gave whimsy.

Other than the clothes themselves, it was wonderful to hear Alber talk as if he was at a dinner party. His humbleness and humor brought a smile to every one's face (and tears to some).

The one thing that he said that truly connected with me was to be small and big. He spoke about the one lesson his mother taught him was to live small- in the sense of living a fulfilling and simplistic life- and to be big- giving back to everyone and the world around you.Because when you take away the clothes and the frills, it all boils down to the living the best life you can.

But, it wouldn't hurt to wear Lanvin whilst doing so...
